Continuing Education – Done!

Books

This blog of mass destruction cleverly disguised as a hot dog stand is the perfect place for commentary on continuing education.  . .  By the way are you done with your continuing education loser?

I am finished with my CE for the year.   I usually don’t get it done early but seriously business has been so sucktastic that I have time for CE, and by the way if you would like to go out for coffee, or lunch or on vacation for a month I have time for that too.   Yet the last course I took was so bad that I am wondering if there is some way I can get those two hours of my life back.

The course was about social media and marketing, but the course description implied that it was about something else and I took the bait.  They tricked me into going.    It would hurt too much to repeat some of the things the speaker said so I won’t.  It would be like reliving it and the nightmares would come back.

The section about blogging almost made me cry but then I realized that I was in the class with some of my closest competitors  and they said that they learned a lot. SWEET!

I have been told that the CEU classes have to reach and to be understood by the least educated among our membership.  That makes sense and I guess most people who attend have no way of knowing if what is being taught is right or wrong.

There isn’t any reason why most education classes for real estate professionals have to be dumbed down but they are and like CE classes they are designed to be understood by the beginner and to bore everyone else to tears.

I refuse to spend another second of my life in one of those dumbed down classes or conferences unless I have to for CEU.  If I leave the room in the middle of your lecture don’t take it personally. I am probably going out to learn something new with my camera or maybe enjoying a cup of coffee and catching up on my reading.

I am a great supporter of MORE and BETTER CE classes. Unfortunately, our state requires subjects like AGENCY, nothing has changed since th 80s and no attempt to help with finance, legal issues web vs print ads etc.

Most of our CE is the same way. I think fair housing and agency are national. We did have a good class put on by the MN association about internet marketing and following the department of commerce rules. I guess I expect CE classes to be a waste of time but the rest of the course don’t have to always be dumbed down.
