Hot Air

HotairWriting at least twelve blog posts a week and one article isn't easy, especially considering that I sell real estate full time. That is why I sometimes have to neglect the real estate weenie for weeks at a time.

Last night I was surfing the net looking for ideas for my next article and I started to notice a theme.  I will call that theme hot air.

I found some posts that were full of advice to Realtors.  Some of it was about dual agency and some was about social media.  Most of what I found was written by people who are only guessing about what any of this is like or how it works for Realtors.  I don't know what their qualifications are but a couple of them seem to have a following.  I didn't really appreciate the article I found about how older agents have trouble with their email and so younger agents have an advantage.  I guess I am an older agent, but can't recall having trouble with my email since 1989 when I was using the Pine email client and had a 1200 baud dial up modem.

Then there was the really bad advice I saw on this new thing that a broker was writing about called twitter.  I looked him up and he did start using twitter last month but he really sucks at it. I never though of twitter as particularly complicated but he decided that his agents need a class.  I never had a twitter class, I just started using it one day for the heck of it but I guess even for those who don't have much experience with it teaching a class is a way to make some money.  Money is really what it comes down to.  Hot air + writing on the internet = money.

I think it is wonderful that there are so many who give us advice on the important topics of the day but there really is a lot of hot air out there and it is unfortunate that the top hot air generators have  a following.  They come and go.  I guess for some real estate, the real estate industry and Realtors are a kind of hobby.  Maybe as a group we are too easily influenced as we struggle with a housing market that has been in the toilet for some time. Sometimes I wonder how the hot air generators would fair if they worked with the general public and were compensated on a 100% commission basis. I suspect that most of them don't have the brass ones needed to pull it off year in and year out.

The people who have the most credibility with me are people like Bill Lublin, Linda Davis, Kristal Kraft, and Lenn Harley.  They have all built successful businesses. When they write about an issue, or even an idea even though I may not always agree I am more inclined to listen and to think about what they write. I seriously doubt if any of them have trouble with their email, and they will still be hard at it next year after the hot air generators have moved on.

Speaking of hot air my apologies for the length of this post.

  1. Oops! Sorry it took me so long to stop by and say “thanks!” I was trying to figure out how to use a keyboard. You know at my age just finding it is difficult! 🙂

Now, could you please explain that thing called email? Can I Twitter it?

I was taught to respect my elders so . . no comment

  3. When RPR launched in san Diego last fall, the was quite a bit of this same hot air. the blog posts were interesting, but I learned the most from Kristal Kraft’s husband in a gold old fashioned face to face chat. I always find the most value in learning from the people who do instead of say.

That is exactly what I am talking about and I have also enjoyed a few great conversations with Larry. He actually sells real estate and he is pretty darn smart.
